‘Erskine Hospital provides accommodation for ex-service men and women; on leaving the army some injured veterans have nowhere to go except a place like Erskine. Therefore we have to maintain our standard of housing. We had 56 cottages which were built some 60 years ago and the time came that they needed to be replaced.
As this was the first housebuilding that Erskine had done since the late 40s we had to pick a contractor that we knew would not let us down – and Mactaggart & Mickel did not let us down. The build was very efficiently conducted, and the Considerate Constructor role was well performed – the residents and neighbours were never disturbed by Mactaggart & Mickel operations. In terms of quality, 5 stars would be an understatement – probably 6 stars would be closer to the mark. We have not had one complaint from any of our tenants with regard to the product, and they are now each paying £500 a year less on heating and lighting because of the energy conservation.
I would absolutely recommend Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts to others – we would not be moving to a further phase of construction if there were any question marks in that regard. We’d like to build the next 20 houses and the next 20 after that until we have replaced all of our 56 homes.’

‘We were delighted to work with Mactaggart & Mickel. They are a real quality housebuilder, and Dunedin Canmore of course strive to build good quality homes as well, and so to have such a link with a private sector developer who is good at what they do was fantastic for us. If you look at the Fountainbridge area, it has fairly high priced, high spec homes – however we put in affordable homes, right in the city centre, that tied in with these high quality houses in a regeneration area.
There’s quite a major area of regeneration in the centre of Edinburgh around the Fountainbridge Brewery and it’s going to take several years to develop, but we’ll keep on looking for opportunities and we’ll keep on building with the quality developers who are there, so with the help of Mactaggart & Mickel we are very much trying to engage with the community, and in doing so add to the housing supply that the area really needs.’
