Mactaggart & Mickel has been hand-crafting homes since 1925 and has a strong reputation for high quality standards. The company was named Homebuilder of the Year at the Herald Property Awards 2008.
It also has the benefit of owning Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems which helps secure the supply chain and allows for the production of bespoke timber frames.
Ultimately, Mactaggart & Mickel is a family-owned company that can work effectively with external partners and has a long standing reputation for high quality standards of construction.
Mactaggart & Mickel employs a wealth of craftsmen and residential property professionals.
The company’s services range from architecture and design, planning, land acquisition and disposal to all areas of construction and sales. As well as homes, we can apply our skills to many other areas, from student accommodation, medical buildings, care homes and commercial units.
Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems provides bespoke timber frames which are energy efficient, efficient to construct and made from sustainable materials.
We work closely with partners to agreed deadlines and timescales, depending on the partners’ needs.
As a privately-owned family company, we have the ability to make quick strategic decisions.
Our current operational areas cover Ayrshire, the central belt, Edinburgh, Perth and the Borders. It is important to emphasise that we can build anywhere in Scotland.
On every development we work closely with the local authority to deliver the desired level of affordable homes. We believe that affordable homes should be built to at least the same quality as those for the private market.
We look to build long-term partnerships with RSLs and councils to deliver the local authorities’ requirements on affordable homes.
Since 1925, Mactaggart & Mickel has worked closely with the communities where we own and develop land. We have been consulting communities and aiming to give something back to the local areas for decades.
Since November 2007, Mactaggart & Mickel undertaken an extensive series of community consultations across Scotland, engaging with local authorities, community councils, stakeholders and residents. This activity has been done in advance of the legislation, so Mactaggart & Mickel is ahead of the requirements.
By taking an honest and transparent approach, these consultations have helped to inform local communities while shaping our creative approach to create developments suitable for the area.
We have a long history of working with like-minded companies to pool expertise.
We are currently working with Shawfair Developments, Edinburgh and Midlothian Councils on the South East Wedge near Edinburgh, as well as Dunedin Canmore Housing.
The company is also part of the City Legacy consortium led by Davis Langdon with architect RMJM, developers Cruden Estates and CCG. As part of this we have been shortlisted for the bid to build.
We have established a sustainability group which has driven forward Mactaggart & Mickel’s environmental agenda.
We will shortly be unveiling our most eco-friendly home to date. The Lomond at Balgarth Gardens in Ayrshire has been built to meet Code Four on the stringent Code for Sustainable Homes. It features a ground source heatpump, rainwater harvesting and is made from energy efficient and sustainable materials.
We also work with Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems, which produces bespoke timber frames from sustainable materials. Timber frames and closed-panel systems offer improved energy efficiency and speed of construction.
All staff have the opportunity to develop their skills and progress up through the company – Ed Monaghan, the managing director, joined the company as an apprentice painter aged 16!
Mactaggart & Mickel operates a successful apprenticeship programme and we have worked closely with the charity, Action for Children to become partners in their Youthbuild project which gives disadvantaged teenagers a route into the construction industry.
For the year to 30 April 2008, Mactaggart & Mickel recorded pre-tax profits of £18.6m, an increase of 13 per cent (2007: £16.5m), and a 48 per cent increase in turnover to £79.7m (2007: £53.9m).
The company has 500 rental homes. As a result, we understand the issues RSLs and local authorities have in managing and maintaining their housing stock and tenant base.
Having been in the housing market since 1925, we have experienced many economic cycles and reacted accordingly. To use some current examples, we are offering a major ownership scheme which allows our buyers to pay only a percentage of the purchase price, with the rest of the price being paid by Mactaggart & Mickel. We are also currently offering a rent to buy scheme.
