Q Which services can Mactaggart & Mickel offer?
A We employ a wealth of craftsmen and residential property professionals. Our services range from architecture and design, planning, land acquisition and disposal to all areas of construction, project management and sales. As well as homes, we have applied our skills to many other areas, such as affordable housing, commercial units and community buildings, and are currently in discussions regarding opportunities in student accommodation, medical buildings, and care homes.
Q If we wanted to work with Mactaggart & Mickel, how quickly can the company start?
A We work closely with partners to agreed deadlines and timescales, depending on the partners’ needs. As a privately-owned family company, we have the ability to make quick strategic decisions.
Q What experience does the company have in building homes for the affordable market?
A We have completed one affordable housing development in Lochrin in Edinburgh, for Dunedin Canmore HA, and are on schedule to complete two more developments in late summer 2011; Cherrybank in Newton Mearns (for Link HA) and Stuart Square in East Craigs (for Places for People HA). Our development at Lochrin was delivered on time and on budget, and was the joint recipient of a 2011 Scottish Design Award for Affordable housing.
On every development we work closely with the RSL and the local authority to deliver the desired level of affordable homes. We believe that affordable homes should be built to at least the same quality as those for the private market. We look to build long-term partnerships with RSLs and councils to deliver the local authorities’ requirements on affordable homes.
Q What partnerships are the company currently engaged in?
A The company is a partner in the City Legacy Consortium led by Davis Langdon with architect RMJM, developers Cruden Estates and CCG, tasked with delivering the Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow. Build work is underway on the first phase of 700 new homes to be constructed for the Games, and following the Games a further 765 will be constructed. Our own component of the project is the building of 225 of the 700 homes along with the subsequent sales and marketing of the 300 private units once the Games has finished.
Q What is the company’s attitude towards energy efficiency / use of sustainable materials?
A In 2007 we established an In-house sustainability working group which has driven forward Mactaggart & Mickel’s environmental agenda. Our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy now sets our targets for sustainability, such reducing our waste to landfill, carbon emissions and water usage as well as using materials and techniques in the most environmentally responsible way possible, managing and developing our land in the most sustainable possible way, and ultimately building homes that are environmentally sustainable, and still attractive to home-buyers
Q What are the company’s latest financial results?
A Our results for the year ending 30 April 2011 are due to be published in October 2011. For the year to 30 April 2010, Mactaggart & Mickel recorded pre-tax profits of £4m, a reversal from a loss of £3.9m the previous year and a 3% per cent increase in turnover to £40m.
The company has a strong asset base, with historical land assets throughout Scotland’s central belt and ownership of over 500 rental homes in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Through this ownership we also understand the issues RSLs and local authorities have in managing and maintaining their housing stock and tenant base.
