A third-generation family member and grandson of the company’s founder, Colonel Andrew Mickel, Bruce Mickel joined the company as a qualified architect in 1970 and has worked across all departments.

Bruce believes that innovation within the industry will continue to drive growth. He is keen to promote sustainability in the way we build our homes and to create homes that are more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient.

Away from house-building, Bruce is a Board member of Cre8te, a charitable trust bringing real employment to the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh. Bruce has a keen interest in the arts and participates in a variety of sports, including sailing, skiing and tennis.

Group Chief Executive Ed Monaghan joined the company as an apprentice at 16. His 30 years of experience place him in a uniquely strong position within our industry.

Ed chairs the Homes for Scotland Working Group on Skills & Training, and chairs the Scottish Construction Skills Group, and sits on the Scottish Building Apprenticeship Training Council as well as the City of Glasgow College’s Liaison Board.

Ed is a founding member of City Legacy, the consortium charged with delivering the Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and sits on the board of Rosemount, a community-based charity which assists local people into employment and helps asylum seekers gain new skills.

Alan Hartley joined the company as a non-executive director on a part-time basis in 2004, after 34 years at KPMG – 20 of these as a tax partner providing advice to the commercial sector. Alan became Finance Director in 2005 and played a pivotal role in overseeing the company through significant change.

He is also Chairman of Governors at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh and holds a number of non-executive directorships and advisory positions.

Derek Mickel’s experience has proved invaluable over the past years and he remains vastly enthusiastic about the future of Mactaggart & Mickel.

Having joined the family business as a manager in 1961, working his way up and becoming a director in 1966, he remains rightly proud of the company, its people and homes.

He continues to be personally involved with the firm – not just at board level, but by going out to meet staff and visit sites – and he personally reads and acts on customer feedback. Away from the office, or building sites, Derek supports the arts, from the RSNO, Scottish Opera and Ballet, keeps active in the garden – weather permitting – and curls regularly during the season.

A fourth-generation family member, Andrew Mickel joined the company in 2000 and is also the former Chairman and Vice Chairman of Homes for Scotland.

Having worked with consultants Caws & Morris in London on commercial, transport and residential projects during the 1990s, Andrew currently works with the CBI Planning Group, the Planning Improvement Service for Scottish Government, and has held a non-executive directorship with an investment trust.

As well as a Board member of the Central Scotland Green Network he is also a director of a community development project in the East End of Glasgow and acts as an advisor for Planning Aid Scotland.

A keen triathlete, in early 2010 Andrew completed the 81-mile Etape Caledonia cycle challenge in Perthshire.

Keith Swinley joined the Board as Non-Executive director in January 2010, bringing a legal background and experience from across a number of industry sectors, with particular expertise in corporate governance and risk management.

Keith is adviser to a Biomass CHP and is on the panel of advisors of Par Equity, a private equity firm specialising in technology and new start-ups. He is also a member of the Boards of Governors of Wellington School and the University of Dundee, and is Chairman of the Patient’s Advocacy Service.

Outside work, Keith is a keen golfer and enjoys reading and travel, when work and family commitments permit.

Ross is a 4th generation family member who first joined Mactaggart & Mickel’s Homes division in January 2006. Ross was appointed Commercial Manager of Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems in 2007, progressing to General Manager in May 2010.

In his role with Timber Systems, Ross has overseen the development and implementation of our innovative closed panel system and bathroom pods, in addition to working with outside partners on a variety of projects to construct traditional homes, hotel and restaurant units, and a self-build extension project.

Ross joined the Group Board in February 2012, and this year will be undertaking the challenge, together with our Contracts division, of ensuring the delivery of 228 new homes for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village in Glasgow.
