Letham Mains is situated on the western edge of Haddington and consists of four fields of agricultural land extending to 54 ha.
The Edinburgh and Lothian Structure Plan required land to accommodate 750 new houses in Haddington to be found by East Lothian Council in its preparation of a new local plan in 2005.
In October 2008, East Lothian Council agreed to allocate land at Letham Mains for 750 new houses. A Masterplan is currently being prepared for the Council’s approval which will deliver in addition to the new housing a new primary school including nursery accommodation and sports and changing facilities for the use of the wider community out with school hours.
The development will offer enhanced protection to a Scheduled Ancient Monument located on site in the form of a Prehistoric Enclosure and seek to encourage walking and cycling through the provision of an integrated footpath/cycleway. Whilst planning permission is yet to be sought, development is anticipated to commence in 2013 and continue over an 8 year period.
