One of Scotland’s largest housing proposals, the Shawfair development located to the South West of Edinburgh and centred around the villages of Danderhall, Millerhill and Newton will see the construction of 4,000 new houses including 800 Affordable Houses, 30 hectares of Business and Medical Park development and the creation of a brand new Local Centre including retail and community centres. It is further proposed on the back of the re opening of the Borders railway line the Waverley Line that a railway halt included in the development affording rail travel into Edinburgh City Centre.

Mactaggart & Mickel has worked in partnership with both Midlothian Council and City of Edinburgh Council to deliver substantial new infrastructure including improved access to the Edinburgh City Bypass at Sheriffhall.

At the very outset Mactaggart & Mickel prepared in cooperation with the local authorities a “Shawfair Development Manual” which has been instrumental in the preparation of the Masterplan for Shawfair. The Masterplan promotes the principle of a compact urban form based on the need to move to a more sustainable development pattern that reduces private car use and promotes public transport, walking and cycling. Houses are to be located close to community facilities, shops and employment opportunities.

A Planning Application in support of the Masterplan is currently with the local authority which will be the subject of a detailed Section 75 Agreement.
