Our new public artwork has been unveiled at Millerhill at Shawfair!

After months of preparation, we are delighted to finally reveal our Millerhill project!

Our Millerhill development, set in idyllic countryside surroundings, is part of the new community of Shawfair in Midlothian. To help create a sense of place and cohesion we chose to commission a piece of public art for the village square at the centre of the development and the finished work was unveiled today by Midlothian Provost Adam Montgomery; The Millerhill Carbon Tower, a stunning 3.2m-high ironwork sculpture depicting the coal-mining heritage of the area and narrating the history and transition of the local area through to recent times.

The sculpture was created by Ratho-based blacksmith P Johnson & Company and will be permanently sited in Millerhill’s village square, overlooked by many of our stunning new homes and apartments. P Johnson & Company won the commission after competing with 22 different entries from artists and sculptors across the UK and abroad.

The work tells the story of coal mining in the area using forms and figures in a spiralling frieze, from carboniferous plants, through hand-delivered buckets of coal and using pit ponies, to using machinery underground. Figures of the coal-mining families of the area are also represented, and all are watched over by two canaries perched on top of the structure, symbolising hope and vision for the new community to develop as a vibrant and positive place to live and work (see more images below).

The artwork and its viewing benches represent an investment of £50,000 by Mactaggart & Mickel Homes, contributing to and supporting the creation of the new Shawfair community.

Shawfair is the largest urban expansion programme ever undertaken in the Edinburgh and Midlothian area, and will contain 4,000 high quality new homes and a low carbon, sustainable district heating system. Three schools will be built for the new area as well as shopping, leisure, and health facilities. Shawfair already features its own railway station connecting to Edinburgh within fifteen minutes and is surrounded by community woodlands and eight miles of cycle paths.

Our first phase of homes at Millerhill at Shawfair is well underway, with the first 20 homes already occupied. 2 to 4 bedroom apartments, terraced homes and townhouses are available now for Reservation or Early Bird Option, priced from £149,995, many eligible for Help to Buy (Scotland).

Visit Milllerhill to see for yourself our fantastic new Carbon Tower, and visit our three stunning show homes - the Raasay 2-bed apartment, the Lismore 3-bed terraced home and the Rannoch 4-bed townhouse set over three storeys.
