Largs development site manager named best in Scotland

A site manager at the family-owned house builder Mactaggart & Mickel’s development in Largs, has been named the best in Scotland by the National House Building Council (NHBC).

Les Duncan, the site manager at The Rise in Largs, won the prestigious Scottish Site Manager of the Year Award at a Glasgow ceremony.

Les will now go forward to compete against the best in the UK. The winner of the national title will be announced on 9 January 2009 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

Ed Monaghan, Mactaggart & Mickel managing director, said: “We take great pride in delivering quality and hand-crafted homes. Les and the team in Largs have shown consistently high standards, as have all our site managers. To be recognised as the best in Scotland by your peers is a tremendous honour.”

Les, from West Kilbride, has been with Mactaggart & Mickel for 11 years and has overseen the construction of The Rise, an 89 home development only a few minutes from Largs town centre.

Also nominated for the top Scottish award was Mike Loughran from Mactaggart & Mickel’s Hillpark development in Edinburgh, who picked up a Seal of Excellence Award. Les and Mike, along with fellow site managers Stuart Gillespie from Ailsa View in Ayr and John Kelly from Mallot’s View in Newton Mearns were also awarded Pride in the Job Quality Awards. Les said: “This award is for the whole team at The Rise and evidence that good training and high standards reap rewards. We’re extremely proud to pick up the Scottish title and looking forward to going up against the best in the UK.”

Now in its 28th year, Pride in the Job is the only national competition to focus on the site manager’s role in producing high quality new homes. Judging takes place all year round and scores are given across 38 different areas of site management, including technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.

Mactaggart & Mickel is leading the charge to revitalise the Scottish housing market by paying Stamp Duty on all new reservations at its existing 15 developments across Scotland, including Netherton Gate in Anniesland and Campsie Village in Lennoxtown. This is applicable to all homes, not just those up to the £175,000 threshold announced by Gordon Brown in September.

The family-owned company, which has been building homes since 1925, also offers first time buyers a Major Ownership Scheme which allows new entrants to the market the opportunity to finance 80 per cent of the purchase price, with Mactaggart & Mickel retaining a 20 per cent stake in the property. Unlike many other schemes on the market, there is no time limit on when the 20 per cent stake is paid back. It is only payable when buyers sell or cease to occupy the property.
