Mactaggart & Mickel honoured by Civic Trust

Baillie Jean Macey, Deputy Lord Provost at Glasgow City Council, presented Scottish homebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel with a Civic Trust Award – a further accolade for the company’s outstanding Home for the Future.

In 1999 when Glasgow celebrated its status as UK City of Architecture and Design, Mactaggart & Mickel was one of four private developers, one housing association and seven architects to take up the challenge to create a Home for the Future as part of a ground-breaking £10 million housing exhibition in the east end of the city.

Three years on, the renowned builder is still receiving recognition and veneration for the company’s exceptional contribution. Working in conjunction with distinguished Glasgow architects Wren Rutherford ASL, Mactaggart & Mickel created two apartments that formed part of the exhibition building at Greendyke Street near Glasgow Green.

Following the completion of the project, Mactaggart & Mickel won numerous awards including the Saltire Society Housing Design Award 2000, commendation; the National Builders Design Award 2000 – Best Home for the Future, and the 1999 What House? Bronze Award.

The latest honour, received by Mactaggart & Mickel Director - Derek Mickel, is awarded by the Civic Trust to organisations considered to underline the very best in urban and environmental design. The Civic Trust looks for criteria in three key areas: sustainable design, context (e.g. enhancing the local environment or benefiting the local community) and access for people with disabilities.

In accepting the Civic Trust Award on Mactaggart & Mickel’s behalf, Derek Mickel said: “The fact that the Home for the Future project is still receiving recognition and awards more than three years on clearly demonstrates to everyone who took part from Mactaggart & Mickel the outstanding quality of their work and commitment.

“ We made a concerted effort at the time to ensure our apartments fitted, where possible, the criteria of the Civic Trust’s rudiments. Both apartments have since been sold are providing what we sent out to achieve – homes for the future!”

Leading interior designer and televisions presenter Anne McKevitt was commissioned by Mactaggart & Mickel to design the interior of one of the company’s apartments and incorporated environmentally friendly materials and innovative technology throughout the property.
