How to create an iconic entrance hall

Your entrance hall serves many different purposes - it’s the first impression of your home and your personality when you welcome visitors, but it’s also of course the welcome that you and your family receive after a long day.

Don’t neglect your hall when planning your new home decoration - it is an important part of your home and definitely worthy of special attention!

Consider lighting – many Mactaggart & Mickel homes include glazed panels to the front door, adding beautiful lightness and airiness to the space, and our three- bedroom Hughes home at Greenan Views in Doonfoot features a unique two-storey vertical hallway window! However, you can enhance the feeling of brightness in your entrance hall by adding a statement ceiling lighting feature.

Choose quirky or elegant wall art and large mirrors to create interest and the illusion of more space… perfectly exemplified in the four-bedroom Miller showhome at our Buchanan Views development in Killearn, and the magnificent five- bedroom Adam showhome at Lethington Gardens in Haddington.

Another important consideration is your choice of flooring – it would be well worth opting for something hardwearing and easy to clean for one of the highest-traffic spaces in the typical home. Rather than necessarily choosing carpet, why not consider tiling, vinyl or laminate? One of our most popular options for the space immediately behind the front door is Matwell (featured in the images above). Make sure you ask our knowledgeable Sales Consultants about your flooring options! And of course, once your entrance hall is perfectly finished with the flooring of your choosing, you can always change things up with a striped or patterned floor runner to lead the eye in to your home.

For practicality, choose an elegant coat stand as an alternative to wall-mounted hooks, and shoe racks to keep things orderly and tidy. Several of our home styles include separate vestibule space, including the four-bed Thomson home, available at Castle Grove and Stewart Gardens in Newton Mearns, and the four-bedroom MacLaren, which is also available at Stewart Gardens plus Kelso Gardens and Greenan Views in Ayrshire.

Why not also organise your entrance hall with shelves or an elegant, minimal piece of furniture? A hall table or console table is both a practical addition - invaluable when arriving home with your hands full - and also the perfect spot to add your favourite flowers or fragrance diffuser to make a memorable first impression.
