Group Chairman Alan Hartley shares Mactaggart & Mickel Group's Annual Results

It's been an absolute privilege to have completed more than two years as chair of Mactaggart & Mickel Group. In this piece, I take a look back at some of the highlights of the past 12 months.

Perhaps surprisingly for a company whose roots are steeped in Scotland, I would like to begin by talking about our first development in England, at Milton-under-Wychwood in the Cotswolds. It is wonderful to see these new homes coming to the market and to receive positive feedback from local people. We encourage the community to share their suggestions with us from an early stage and do all we can to blend in. My congratulations to site manager Paul Starritt for winning an industry award for achieving the highest standards in housebuilding at this landmark development.

I am particularly proud that we continue to provide a positive experience for homebuyers. This is borne out by us receiving a 5-star rating for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation for the seventh year in a row. Much of the credit for this tremendous achievement goes to director Joanne Casey. Joanne has now been appointed MD of our Homes England division and I am confident that our customers in England will already be receiving the same, superb level of customer service as those in Scotland have enjoyed for decades.

Mactaggart & Mickel, as the name suggests, was formed in 1925 by two families coming together to form a housebuilding company. A few years later, the Mactaggart family left to pursue a different business venture – but allowing us to use their name – so I am delighted to share with you the news that the current Mactaggart & Mickel is once again doing business with the Mactaggart family. We have joined forces to invest in two commercial properties in New York City and, in the past weeks, have also signed a deal to purchase two adjacent office buildings in Edinburgh’s New Town.

My final comments relate to our people. We rely far less on using sub-contractors than many in the construction industry, preferring to recruit directly and support colleagues to develop rewarding careers.

It is thanks to our entire team that we have delivered a robust set of financial results today, driving a rise in turnover to £84.7m. You can read more about our results here.
