Creating the perfect home office

While many of you have been spending the past weeks working from home, have you found yourself wondering how you could make your home working space nicer and more comfortable?

It seems likely that home working will become more and more commonplace in the future, now that so many people have experienced it, adjusted to and found new ways of communicating, sharing and collaborating with each other. Not to mention the benefits of a better work-life balance for you and your family, more flexibility of time management and no commute!

Did you know there are plenty of easy ways to make the most of your existing home office space? Here are a few simple tips for creating an environment at home which helps you focus and boosts your productivity.

Invest in a comfortable chair ... upholstered vintage armchairs may look stylish, but they won’t support your back when you’re sat at a keyboard. A really comfortable and supportive office chair will aid your concentration and make you want to put in the time at your desk. Ikea offers a great selection to suit all budgets…

Make sure you’re getting some natural light... the ideal configuration for your desk is with natural light coming in at one side, not in front of you or behind you. Also, a nice anglepoise lamp is also a good idea as a bit of a lighting boost for hours of the day with less daylight.

Consider buying a larger desk... you might need more room than you think for all your notes, files and reference materials.

Follow ergonomic rules just as you would in your normal office.... for your ideal posture and comfort while working, the top of your computer screen should be at eye level or slightly below. Position your keyboard so your forearms are parallel to the floor and adjust your chair so your feet rest firmly on either the floor or a footrest.

Add some greenery... did you know that having some small indoor plants around your working space will not only add mood-enhancing colour and character, they can also boost the air quality! Click for more information and some plant suggestions…

Create some separate comfy space… a small separate place for you to think, read or take a short break will give you a welcome change of scene and help to reduce stress. Choose a nice comfy chair or a beanbag for curling up – perhaps with a luxurious throw and pillow. You could consider a comfort zone to be the overlooked perk of the home office!

Wire management goes a long way... keep your desk tidy and organised and your cables close to hand with a simple cable clip – this clever design is made of natural wood and has an adhesive back so you can fasten it to any surface.

Upgrade to high-speed internet... Never again miss crucial information in a video call because your screen froze! Faster internet is perhaps one of the best ways to boost your efficiency and productivity – you won’t regret it!
